Phone interview checklist
11 steps to acing your next phone interview…
Create a checklist. Review the job posting and make a list of how your qualifications match the hiring criteria. Have the list available so you can glance at it during the interview.
Do your research. Research the company and interviewers. Make notes and refer back to these.
Keep your CV close at hand. On your desk, next to you, so you can easily refer to it.
Have written prompts for any questions that you want to ask. Your interviewers will expect you to ask questions (remember - you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you!)
Have a pen and paper and be prepared to take notes. Write down the answers to any questions you had or important/interesting information the interviewers give you - don’t worry about trying to remember it all, just focus on the interview and refer back to your notes later!
Find a quiet room. Evict the kids, house-mates, and pets. Turn off the TV. Close the door. No interruptions.
Silence all other notifications on your phone and laptop. There is nothing more distracting than being on an important call while your friends WhatsApp group is buzzing at 90 miles per hour.
Wear earphones to eliminate background noise. Listen to the interviewers before answering questions, ask interviewers to repeat themselves if required.
Don’t slouch on the couch. Sit at a chair and table/desk, or stand. Standing promotes voice projection.
Have a glass of water at hand. There is nothing worse than being on a call with a dry throat. Trust me.
Send a thank-you note. Thank the interviewers for their time, reconfirm your interest in the company, role and desire to progress to the next step. Send this the same day as the interview.
